A design that has been unchanged for decades and is widely recognised attracts imitations, and the visual differences are small while the performance differences are not.
Why Copies Exist
The form is simple: a plastic runway, a fixed blade, a dial and a guard. Copying the shape is straightforward.
Copying the blade is not. Steel selection, heat treatment and hand finishing are the expensive parts, and they are invisible in a photograph.
That is why look-alikes typically match the appearance closely and cut noticeably worse.
What to Check
- The brand name moulded or printed on the body itself
- A stated country of manufacture on the packaging
- A model number that appears in the manufacturer’s own range
- Retail packaging rather than a plain bag
- Blade inserts that match the published set for that model
- A seller who is an authorised distributor

The Price Signal
Not decisive on its own and worth noticing. A tool at a fraction of the usual price, from a seller with no history, is unlikely to contain the expensive part.
Equally, a high price does not prove authenticity. The seller matters more than the number.
What You Actually Lose
Not the plastic. A copied body is usually adequate.
What is lost is edge retention and cutting quality. A blade that dulls within weeks turns a tool into a source of frustration, and a dull mandoline is more dangerous than a sharp one because it needs force.
Replacement blades also will not fit, which removes the main route to keeping a slicer alive for years.

If You Already Own One
A tool that cuts well is doing its job whatever the label says. The question only becomes practical when the blade dulls and no replacement fits.
