It is merely to your wind up this begins to falter, but the slap-upwards finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Excellently staged and intelligently dialogued, it has no high difficulty from inside the way of life down its incredibly ugly identity.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin said “The film motions on an instant speed, brand new dialogue was slick and you will characterisations fundamentally productive. The film’s blogger and movie director, Robert Rossen, creates an effective multidimensional chess games, having mortal bet, between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) has worked at gambling establishment and you may old an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic script, the newest cast’s suavely regulated gestures away from love and you may hazard, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can stylishly cocky images (plus their governmental conscience) make this pugnacious but really outlined spectacle a low profile antique of one’s genre.” [ 10 ]

Ace performances because of the Manhood Powell, due to the fact a playing household overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, as an authorities inspector, in addition to up the get . Although the plot follows a familiar pattern, the characterizations is new as well as the activities adequate in order to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you may topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney touch. Unusual digital camera bases arrive on occasion to escalate attract and briefly arrest the eye. Strong teamplay of the Robert Rossen, increasing as the manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, completely new copywriter and you can associate producer, together with aids in making this a soft production.” [ 11 ]

Its generally a question of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces stylishly if you’re a large cast out-of actors and you can actresses render him regular support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good nothing woman whom brings forth the best in him and Ellen Received is the sleek and you can slinky vixen exactly who will get him to the jams. Thomas Gomez try fatty as villain and Lee J. Cobb does a different ready concert tour since a tired cops inspector whom ultimately shuts your situation. Many drinking and you can smoking is performed from the every worried.” [ 12 ]
